Letter to the Editor
Board criticized for
programcancellation
To the editor;
It was recently announced that
the successful John Glenn Scholars
programwouldno longer continue.
As a Scholars board member, I
amdeeply disappointed that the stu-
dents of John Glenn will be denied
the opportunity to be challenged by
this program. The decision to end
the program was very difficult, but
necessary.
As was reported by The Eagle,
the founders and financial support-
ers of the Scholars program, Mr. and
Mrs. Shaw, no longer received the
staff support that was promised
when approached to start the pro-
gram. The Scholars program was a
collaboration of staff, students and
parents. The success of the program
can be traced to the leadership and
enthusiasm of John Glenn's school
psychologist and the scores of staff who served as mentors. The former superin-
tendent, with the support of the board of education, was responsible for the
demise of the Scholars program. Thewithdrawal of staff supportmade it impossi-
ble to continue the program.
The success of the Scholars program can't be denied. By any metric, the pro-
gram was not only improving student grade point averages, but also changing
lives. One only had to attend an awards banquet to understand how meaningful
and life changing the experience was for both students and mentors. These ban-
quets were the largest gathering of students, parents and staff outside of gradua-
tion.
This program realized significant student academic success through its ALL
IN behavior by its founders, staff, students and parents. It is shocking that mem-
bers of the board of educationwhowere present at the banquets did not stand up
for the program instead of acquiescing to the actions of the former superinten-
dent.
As a former 11-year school board member, I believed it was essential for each
boardmember to think for themselves andmake decisions in the best interests of
students. In this case, the members of the Wayne-Westland School Board choose
to follow the lead of the superintendent instead of supporting the students of
JohnGlenn.
By all accounts, the Scholars programhas not only impacted academic grades,
it has created a high school culture supportive of academic achievement. It is sad
to think that half of Wayne-Westland's high school students will not have available
to them this outstanding academic program. More than 600 John Glenn students
each semester will be denied the opportunity to have an academic and personal
developmentmentor.
If, as a school board member, I was made aware of a high school program that
produced significant academic results, engaged students, teachers, and parents,
resulted in a positive change to the school culture and was accomplished with
limited funds, I would have said I'm ALL IN. Seldom does a program like John
Glenn Scholars come along, it is a shame that the Wayne-Westland Board of
Educationwasn't ALL IN.
