Calendar of events
Application deadline extended
The application deadline for
the Belleville Area Council for the
Arts Community Art Show has
been extendeduntil Sept. 9.
This is a non-juried show open
to all artists and all media. There
are three categories, ages 6-12, 13-
17 and 18 and older.
The show will take place from
noon until 7 p.m. Sept 13 and 14
and from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 14 at the St.
Anthony's Catholic Church gymna-
sium.
There is a $10 fee for artist
entries and cash prizes will be
awarded in eachage group.
Admission to the show for the
public is free. There will be baked
goods available for purchase.

Car raffle under way
The Belleville Area Chamber of
Commerce is sponsoring a draw-
ing for a 24-month lease on a 2014
Ford Focus. Mileage allowed will
be 10,500 per year.
The drawing will take place at
theWinterfest, on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Ticket cost is $20 each and only
1,000 tickets will be sold. Odds of
winning are better than winning
the lottery, according to chamber
representatives.

through the Belleville Area

Art classes offered
TheNorthvilleArt House at 215
Cady St. is nowoffering fall classes
for adults and children in subjects
such as art exploration, drawing,
watercolors, oil painting, mixed-
media, calligraphy, color work-
shops, a drop-in studio and others.
This year the art house is also
offering classes designed for
homeschools in kindergarten
through 12th grade.

Raffle tickets aid shelter
Jake's Auto and Truck Repair
has donated a 2013 Del Ray scoot-
er which is being raffled off to
help fund the Romulus Animal
Shelter.

YappyHour planned
Bark For Life is planning a
social gathering for dog owners
and their dogs from 11 a.m. until 3
p.m. Sept. 7 during the Plymouth
Fall Festival.
The event will take place in the
tent located behind E.G. Nick's
restaurant onForest Street.
The event is a fundraiser for
the American Cancer Society and
will feature 12 vendors, a 50/50 raf-
fle, guess jars and amagician. E.G.
Nick's will be providing food serv-
ice from the restaurant kitchen
during the event.

Progressive raffle continues
The City of Wayne Goodfellow
No Child Without A Christmas
campaign is sponsoring a progres-
sive raffle to help fund the holiday
purchase of gifts and food for the
underprivileged in the area.
The jackpot is currently at
$3,800 and the next drawing is slat-
ed for Sept. 9. Tickets are avail-
able at Avenue Bar and Grill, AKA
Sports orHenry's ServiceCenter.
All proceeds are used to help
needy children during the holi-
days.
Church hosts kick-off dinner
Our Lady of Good Counsel
Catholic Church in Plymouth will
host a free Alpha Kick-off dinner
from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 7, 1-3 p.m. Sept.
8 and from5-7 p.m. Sept. 14.
The dinner will be followed by
a presentation introducing the
new parish Alpha Course, a10-
week programaimed at answering
the call to theNewEvangelization.
Pastor, Fr. John Riccardo believes
that Alpha is the way "to teach the
truth of the Gospel and to spread
the Good News to all people that
we may share in God's own abun-
dant life." The dinners are open to
Catholic and non-Catholics who
livewithin the parishboundaries.

Geneologists plan Showand Tell
What secrets have been found
in great-grandma's trunk, stored
away in the attic? A newspaper
clipping, old photographs, letters
fromfamily ondistant shores?
The public is invited to attend,
free of charge, the meeting of the
Northville Genealogical Society.
The presentations will take a vari-
ety of forms, but all will encourage
informal discussions and informa-
tion sharing. Members will par-
ticipate, and the public is encour-
aged to join in.
The 1:15 p.m. meeting will take
place Sunday, Sept. 8 at the
Northville District Library, 212
West Cady, inNorthville.
Individual help on genealogy is
offered in the Local History Room
at the Northville District Library
from 1-3 p.m. Monday afternoons
and also by appointment. For

Tai Chi students sought
The Wayne Senior Services
Department is seeking beginning
students for a Tai Chi class which
take splace from 9-10 a.m.
Tuesdays at the Wayne
CommunityCenter.
The session continues for 10
weeks and is prices at $65.

There are still appointments
available for the American Red
Cross Blood Drive set for 11 a.m.
until 4:45 p.m. Sept 9 at Plymouth

great need for blood resources
and every pint helps meet the crit-
ical demand in our area, accord-
ing to organizers.

Philharmonic hosts preview
The Michigan Philharmonic
will host a season preview cele-
bration at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the
Plymouth Community Arts
Council, 774 N. Sheldon Road in
Plymouth.
Conductor Nan Washburn will
share the music, guest artists and
composers to be featured in the
upcoming new season during a
wine and cheese reception.
Those who order season tickets
to the Michigan Philharmonic will
automatically be entered to win a
2-year lease on a 2014 Cadillac

Chamber hostsCasinoNight
The Belleville Area Chamber of
Commerce will host a trip to the
Greektown Casino beginning with
the bus departure at 5 p.m. Sept.
14 returning at about 11 p.m.
Tickets are priced at $25 per
person and include transportation
to and from Greektown Casino, a
$20 Bonus Play, a $5 food voucher,
bottledwater and snacks.
The bus will leave promptly
from Walmart, 10562 Belleville
Road.
