Helping Hand seeks donations for Christmas meals
It's one holiday down, and one
to go for RomulusHelpingHands-
in 2012, at least.
Unfortunately, after a success-
ful Thanksgiving, the organization
is in need of donations in order to
provide food for needy families
for the Christmas holiday, accord-
ing to Romulus Mayor Alan
Lambert.
Lambert, who donated 10
turkeys to the food pantry for
Thanksgiving, said he will donate
10 hams to be distributed to
Romulus residents in need for the
upcomingChristmas season.
“It really is a good organiza-
tion,” he said. “They do a lot of
good in the community.”
Lambert said his office would
coordinate donation efforts with
the city council, and asked any
residents watching the city coun-
cil meeting last Monday night to
help if they could.
Located at 37510 West Huron
Dr., the food pantry is open from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays,
Wednesdays andThursdays.
It serves Romulus residents
only who are referred there
either by a social worker, teacher,
minister or other authority figure
and has provided that help for
decades.
Former City Councilman
Harry Crout said it was important
to donate-particularly during the
holiday season.
“We need to take care of our
residents,” said Crout. “Without
our residents we wouldn't be a
city.”

People of all ages braved rainy
weather on Dec. 7 to sing carols
and welcome Santa Claus as the
City of Romulus official Christmas
Treewas lit inHistorical Park.
Aly Wojtylko, 13, received rave
reviews for leading the crowd of
more than 100 individuals in holi-
day songs. When Santa was
delayed, she led the group with
additional carols to fill the time.
After Santa arrived by fire truck,
Mayor Alan R. Lambert presented
him to a key to the city before the
Jolly Old Elf addressed the dozens
of good boys and girls in atten-
dance. This year's Christmas Carol
was Elizabeth Wadsworth, grand-
daughter of Councilman William J.
Wadsworth and daughter of
Romulus
Recreation
Commissioner William M.
Wadsworth.

announced the three winners of
the “Christmas Time in Romulus”
drawing contest. Astrid Cook, Asa
Varner and Mackenzie Whitehill of
teacher Julie Flinkman's first-
grade class at Barth Elementary
School were chosen to receive $25
gift cards toToysRUs.
The children's assignment was
to draw a picture of something in
Romulus during the Christmas sea-
son. The contest was sponsored by
the Recreation Commission and
Public ServiceCredit Union.
The festivities continued at the
Romulus Progressive Hall, where
Santa met with an even larger
crowd of boys and girls. Each child
received a free photograph with
Santa, thanks to local sponsorships.
Christmas Carol distributed stock-
ings containing goodies and a toy
car to each of the children.
Additional photoswere only $3.
“This was once again a commu-
nity effort,” said Maria Lambert,
director of the Downtown
Development Authority (DDA). “I
want to thank all the organizations
and individuals that donated their
time and funds to bring smiles to
our children.”
Organizers thanked this year's
sponsors, including the DDA,
Romulus Fire Department, Rotary
Club of Romulus, Romulus
Progressive Club, Greater Romulus
Chamber of Commerce, Romulus
Police Officers Association,
Pumpkin Festival Committee,
Recreation Commission and
RomulusHistorical Commission.
