Rachal said serving as an election work-
er was especially significant since it was a
Presidential Election that draws more vot-
ers. At age 17, the senior was not eligible to
vote, but she called working the election “a
great experience.”
“It allowed us to learn about how elec-
tions work andwe alsowere able to help out
the community,” Rachal said. “We greeted
people and told them where their precinct
voted. We also helped put their ballot in the
tabulator if they needed help. I learned
there are a lot of challenges that may come
about. People sometimes are not nice, but
wewere still nice to them.
“We had a lot of voters that came out. It
was really special. It was so important to
everybody tomake sure their vote counted.”
Other students on hand for the presenta-
tion were seniors Carly Paul (chapter vice
president), Sierra Scott andMariaLaird and
juniors Kyle Brown, Alyx Johnson, Gabrielle
Miller, Samantha Stobbe, Marquelle
Ballard, Muhammad Sumbal, Taryn

The students volunteer at community
events on a regular basis, which gives them
service hours while helping the public.
Rachal said students organized a can drive
to collect food for a homeless shelter and
are regular participants in the roast beef
dinners the second Saturday of themonth at
Romulus Community United Methodist
Church. The group is planning to host a
Santa Shop in December to allow kinder-
garteners at Wick Elementary School to
shop for free for their parents.
“We want to show our community that we
care about what's going on,” Rachal said.
“We're not just kids going to school for the
education.Wewantmore than that.”
Math teacher Kathy Abdo and counselor
Liza Mockeridge are Romulus High School
advisers to theNational Honor Society.
“I am proud of my NHS students here at
Romulus High School,” Abdo said. “They
have proven themselves to be leaders in the
classroomaswell as in the community.”
"They had a duty to properly store toxic
medication," Gerou said. "They had a duty to
care for the child."
The pair are no longer together and live
separately, according to court records.
They are both free on bond while await-
ing trial in circuit court. If convicted, they

the opportunity to expand,” noted Dora
