Students at Canton Charter Academy
raised $500 to make hand-tied blankets for
patients at The University of Michigan's C.S.
Mott Children'sHospital inAnnArbor.
Eighth-grade students in Yamamah
Sawalha's community service class asked fel-
low students in kindergarten through eighth
grade to donate a dollar for the project. For
every dollar donated, the students placed a
yellow block letter Mon a blue bulletin board.
The plan paid off, and they exceeded their
donation goal.
“I thought this project was a great success,”
said student Jacob Gruenberg. “The first
week of donations started slow, but then
everybody was encouraged to put even more
effort into the project and it took off.”
The students needed to work fast to hand-
tie 55 blankets so they would be ready for an
assembly with a representative fromC.S. Mott
Children's Hospital on Nov. 16. The represen-
tative talked to the students about the hospital
and thanked themfor their generosity.
“It made me feel good about myself to be
making blankets for sick children,” student
ElizabethCothran said.
Sawalha said she was proud of the way her
students handled this project from start to fin-
ish. “I am so pleased withmy class for coming
up with an idea from scratch, putting it into
place, sticking with it, and ultimately prevail-
ing,” Sawalha said.
The blankets will be given to long-term
patients at thehospital.

Canton Township is currently col-
laborating with Chevron Energy
Solutions on a project which offi-
cials hope will decrease utility costs
by more than $5.7 million during the
next 15 years.
The project, approved by the
Canton Board of Trustees last May,
includes the upgrading of heating
and cooling systems, as well as
replacement of mechanical systems,
water and lighting fixtures, in addi-
tion to systemcontrols.
Through energy efficiency
improvements, Canton Township
will reduce its purchase of electrici-
ty and natural gas and, in turn,
reduce carbon emissions, according
to Township Maintenance Manager
BradSharp.
“These improvements and instal-
lation of new energy efficient equip-
ment will all be paid for by the
resulting savings in utility and oper-
ational costs over the next 15 years
with energy savings that are guaran-
teed by Chevron Energy Solutions,”
Sharp said. “No Township operating
funds will be used to pay for any of
these improvements, including new
lights, boilers, water fixtures, etc.”
In addition to the energy savings,
additional improvements will
replace aging mechanical systems,
not only reducing utility use but also
helping replace aging equipment
without capital expenditures. These
energy conservation measures
showcase just some of the forward-
thinking strategies Canton Township
has implemented to streamline
operating expenses in order to bet-
ter serve the growing needs of resi-
dents, Sharp added.
Chevron Energy Solutions will
design and engineer the project, and
will install, monitor and guarantee
energy conservation performance
measures.
The company will also imple-
ment efficiency improvements
designed to provide better lighting
quality and aesthetics, while
decreasing maintenance costs.
Projects will include: replacement
of lighting fixtures; plumbing
upgrades and improvements; instal-
lation of new mechanical units and
controls and installation of new
high-efficiency boilers.
Although many of the system
improvements will take place
behind the scenes and will not be
visible to the general public, two
projects will be more noticeable to
Canton residents. One of those is the
replacement of the Canton
Township Administration Building
promotional message board sign
with a high-efficiency LED sign.
Another planned upgrade is the
replacement of the 10-year-old
splash playground at Heritage Park
by next summer, the new systemwill
feature low-use water features,
which will re-circulate domestic
water compared to the current
water flow-through system.
No Township operating funds will be used
to pay for any of these improvements, including
new lights, boilers, water fixtures, etc.
