Two veteran law enforcement
officers have retired from the
Canton Police Department. Deputy
Chief Robert Kerr and Police
Officer Kevin Rize will both retire
with 28.5 years of service to the
Canton community.
Kerr was hired by the depart-
ment in 1985 as a patrol officer. He
was promoted to the rank of ser-
geant in 1994, lieutenant in 1998
and became deputy chief in 2008.
Kerr earned his bachelor's degree
fromUniversity ofMichigan andhis
master's degree from Eastern
MichiganUniversity. He also has an
extensive resume of technical and
leadership training accumulated
throughout his career. Early on as a
police officer,
Kerr was selected as one of the
original field training officers and
department instructors. As a shift
commander he was responsible for
the daily operation of road patrol
shifts, while also assuming ongoing
administrative tasks and projects.
In his current role as deputy chief,
Kerr has been second in charge,
reporting to Director of Public
Safety Todd Mutchler. He was
tasked with overseeing both the
patrol and staff operations divi-
sions, which encompass all aspects
of the police department including
personnel, policy andprocedures.
Kerr is most notable within the
department for his role as accredi-
tation manager, successfully guid-
ing the department to its first re-
accreditation through the
Commission on Accreditation for
LawEnforcement Agencies in 2010.
Rize was hired by the depart-
ment in 1985 as a patrol officer. He
earned his associate's degree from
Schoolcraft College and has an
expansive biography of training
and associated specialized assign-
ments as department instructor in
firearms, proficiency driving, taser,
and defensive tactics. In addition,
Rize was selected for numerous
assignments during his career
including the Special Enforcement
Unit, Bicycle Unit and Rapid
Response Unit. Throughout the
years, Rize has been the recipient
of more than 30 department
awards and citations including
being selected as the Officer of the
Year in 2008.
Rize is also the proud recipient
of a commendation from the
Canton Fire Department recogniz-
ing him for his role as first respon-
der to a 9-1-1 call reporting a
woman in labor at her residence.
Rize assisted with the baby as the
mother gave birth, clearing the
newborn boy's airway and stabiliz-
ing the situation until paramedics
arrived.
Mutchler commented, “These
two fine law enforcement officers
had made significant contributions
to public safety in Canton. They
both possess individual attributes
that made them valued employees,
contributing to the high level of
police services provided to the
Canton community. While they will
be missed, we wish them all the
best in their retirement.”
