More than 55 scarecrows fill
the streets of Wayne this year
during the 5th Annual
ScarecrowShow.
The straw sculptures were
hung by volunteers from Wayne
Main Street and Wayne
Memorial High School Junior
Reserve Officer Training Corps
(JROTC) earlier this month.
Each scarecrow has been
designed by an individual, fami-
ly, community group or business
and one will have the honor of
being named the online voting
contest winner and another will
be designated as the People's
Choice contest winner. The win-
ners will be awarded a small
prize sponsored by Kurt's Caps
and be featured on the registra-
tion form next year along with
having bragging rights.
The scarecrow with the most
“likes” on theWayneMain Street
Facebook page in the 2017
album will be the online contest
champion.
The People's Choice winner
will be chosen during a recep-
tion and voting from 3-7 p.m.
today, Oct. 19 at Derby's Alley,
35005 West Michigan Ave. in
Wayne. Voting will take place
during the evening and compli-
mentary refreshments will be
served.
The people's choice winner
will be announced at the event.
For more information, call
Wayne Main Street at (734) 629-

Scarecrow winner revealed tonight
istrative issue and it is not the job
of the school board to direct per-
sonnel.”
Westland resident Carol Sharp
attended a meeting of school
board members recently to ques-
tion the abandonment of the pro-
gram.
“As a donor, I was concerned
and I wanted answers. I asked the
board members why they would-
n't support a program that did so
much for the schools. I admit, I
was upset about this situation,”
she said.
“I think the parents should
know what is going on. I don't
have kids in the schools, but my
husband and I believed in this
program enough to contribute to
it as a way to improve the image
of our community.”
Sharp said she got no answers
during the meeting, but following
the adjournment, many of the
boardmembers.
“Nobody has been as generous
to this school district as Glenn
Shaw,” Cox said. “Not just with
this program, but with the schol-
arships from the Westland
Community Foundation which he
founded.”
The program, according to
financial records, provided more
than $45,000 in scholarships to
local students along with more
than $215,000 in financial aid.
“We certainly miss the pro-
gram and would like to see it
return,” noted school board treas-
urer Thomas Buckalew, who
mentored a John Glenn student
last semester. “The board doesn't
have control of the program.”
“They were bad partners,”
Shaw said. “When we initiated
the program, I asked for assur-
ances that the district administra-
tion was 'all-in' on this effort. I
was assured that we would have
four years and with the financial
contributions of the Westland
Foundation and my family, the
district would provide Lou
Pryzybylski as the liaison.
“I was informed earlier this
year that his duties now included
Wayne Memorial High School
and the Tinkham students and
that he no longer had the time to
work on the Scholars program,”
Shawsaid.
Cox said that as a school psy-
chologist,
funding
for
Pryzybylski's salary does not
cover his participation in this
“volunteer” effort. Cox admitted
however that to his knowledge
that funding and those require-
ments have not changed since the
programbegan two years ago.
“This was a step toward
improving the image of our com-
munity and our school district
and these people have allowed it
to fail,” Shawsaid.
“There really aren't words to
express my disappointment. The
interaction with these students,
the mentors and the teachers was
one of the defining moments of
my life. It was one of the most
gratifying things I have ever been
involved in,” he added.
The Champions of John Glenn
programon which the Scholars of
John Glenn was modeled will
continue without interruption.
The salary of the liaison at that
school is fully-fundedby donors.
“We think it is an excellent
program and if we can come
together as a community to fund
this program, it would be great. It
is an excellent program and we
would love to have it back,”
Walker said.
“I do want to thank everyone
who was involved and remind all
those who contributed financially
or volunteered with the students
that this programdidnot fail. This
district failed,” Shawconcluded.
