What's in a name? Apparently enough to
prompt the resignation of Karin LaMothe,
who is either the executive assistant to Van
Buren Township Supervisor Linda Combs
or deputy supervisor of the township.
LaMothe submitted her resignation
Sept. 25, following some controversy and
discussion regarding her actual job title.
She said she will remain on the job until a
replacement is found.
LaMothe's resignation followed the
change of her job title fromexecutive assis-
tant to deputy supervisor back to executive
assistant all since January.
Combs announced that LaMothe would
be the deputy supervisor on June 14.
Combs said at the time that the change in
title was a clarification of LaMothe's job
description and duties, which would not
change.
“This is not a change in job duties, this is
just a clarification of her importance to this
township. I apologize for the short
notice…but this is a function that the
supervisor is allowed to do. I just felt it was
necessary to clarify her position within the
township,” Combs said at a board meeting
where the promotionwas discussed.
That job title was cited as the reason the
board delayed a vote on amendments to
the township budget at the Aug. 20meeting.
Board members claimed that the discrep-
ancy between the title listed in the line
itemandLaMothe's actual title prevented a
vote.
Combs said at the Sept. 3 meeting that
LaMothe would return to the executive
assistant job title as it was a more accurate
reflection of the duties she performed.
LaMothe said that the title changes and the
rumored controversy at the board level
regarding her job did not impact her deci-
sion to resign.
She cited personal reasons for leaving
her position and had only praise for
Combs.
“I maintain the utmost respect for
Supervisor Linda Combs…she leads our
community with compassion, commitment
to the best interests of our residents, and
has an inspiring vision for the township,”
LaMothe said in an emailed statement.
