Murder by Poe opens tomorrow
Edgar Allan Poe's dark tales will come to
life in the opening play of Barefoot
Productions at 8 p.m. Oct. 11-12, 18 and 19 and
at 2 p.m. Oct. 13 and 20.
The production includes a reading of The
Raven by Michael Corliss of Livonia. Richard
Pientak of Canton Township will read Lenore
and Terry A. Vivani of Westland will read
Annabel Lee. All three will perform The Bells.
The cast also includes Samantha Lowry of
Novi, Brian Plater of Plymouth, Matthew
DeLisle of Canton, Jonathon and Stacy
Wennstrom of Canton, Eric Corliss of Canton,
Beth Duey of Northville, Gary Tunrquist of
Plymouth and Lauren Berryman of
FarmingtonHills.
Tickets are $15 with the exception of Oct. 12
when they are $20 which includes an
Afterglowreception.

Free rock concert planned
A Plymouth-area rock band will stage a free
concert at The Plymouth Community Arts
Council's Joanne Winkleman Hulce Center for
theArts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.
The Plymouth based group D'Art Band will
perform a mix of original music and classic
rock at this free concert as part of the art coun-
cil SaturdayNightConcert series.
"This is a great chance for us to show our
appreciation to our fans in the wonderfully
artistic atmosphere of the PCAC" said D'Art
Banddrummer Jerry Teevens. The other band
members are Jane Renwick Fry, lead vocals
and percussion; Waldon Reed Jr., lead guitar
and vocals; Pete Celano, bass guitar, rhythm
guitar and vocals; Craig Fry, keyboards and
vocals andCelesteReed, flute andpercussion.
The Joanne Winkleman Hulce Center for
the Arts is located at 774 N. Sheldon Road in
Plymouth.
D'Art Band is a Plymouth-based rock 'n' roll
band with roots stretching back about 30 years.
The group performs original music and classic
rock.
Wayne library to sell books
The Annual Friends of the Library used
book sale at theWayne Public Library will take
place from from noon until 5 p.m. Oct. 10
throughOct 12.
There will be a great selection of books and
othermaterials, according to organizers.

Church seeks crafters for show
St. Theodore's Confraternity of Christian
Women is looking for crafters for the annual
church fall craft show.
There are 70 tables available for rent at $25
each for the show which will take place at the
church from9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Oct. 12.

Church renting craft tables
St. John's Episcopal Church, Westland will
be having a Fall Festival and Trunk Sale from
10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.
There will be music by The Optomystics, a
car show, vendors and crafters, a bake sale,
bouncers, crafts and food anddrink for sale.
The Trunk or Treat will take place from
6:30-7:30 p.m. when cars will fill the lot for the
Halloween celebration. Cars may enter the
parking lot and set up from 5-6 p.m. there will
be treats, prizes for costumes and a fire pit
with s'mores.
Tables are available at $25 for craft sales.

The church is located at 555 S. Wayne Road
in Westland, south of Cherry Hill and north of
Palmer.
Firefighters host open house
The Canton Fire Department will be host-
ing an open house from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on
Saturday, Oct. 12 at Fire Station #1, located at
1100 S. CantonCenterRoad.
This year the open house is planned in con-
junction with National Fire Prevention Week
Oct. 6-12. The event will include station tours,
fire gear dress-up station, fire safety fun bags
for kids, fire preventionhandouts, hot dogs and
popcorn.
The Fire Safety House will also be open for
children to tour.
In addition to the open house, fire fighters
will be presenting fire safety talks at local ele-
mentary schools during the month of October.
Later in the year, the department will sponsor
the Annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest.
Information on the poster contest will be dis-
tributed through local elementary schools.

Chamber hosts candidates
The Greater Romulus Chamber of
Commerce is sponsoring a Meet The
Candidates night from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Oct.
15 at the Romulus Athletic Center, 35765
NorthlineRoad.
Moderator for the event will be 34thDistrict
Court JudgeTinaGreen.
Themeeting is open to the public and there
is no admission charge.

Craft showsupports scholarships
The Plymouth Canton Chapter of Kappa
Gamma (DKG), an international society of
women in education that promotes the profes-
sional and personal growth of women educa-
tors, will host their 29th annual fall craft show
from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Oct. 19 at West Middle
School, 44401 Ann Arbor Trail (at Sheldon) in
Plymouth.
The craft show is the main fundraiser for
the group which provides scholarships for stu-
dents in the area.
Juried crafters will display handmade jew-
elry, pottery, clothing seasonal decor, metal
sculptures, gourmet foods, and more. The
event will also offer drawings for several
prizes, including handmade Amish quilts, a
golf outing at Fox Hills Country Club, tickets to
a 2014 Detroit Tigers game, a gift package to
932 Penniman Bed and Breakfast, and gift cer-
tificates to a number of local restaurants.
The American Association of University
Women (AAUW) will join the craft show with a
used book sale. Breakfast and lunch items will
be available in the cafeteria, and admission is
$2.

Co-op hosts rummage sale
A fall rummage sale is planned from 9 a.m.
until 4 p.m. Oct. 17 and 18 and 10 a.m. until 4
p.m. Oct. 19 at Whispering Willows Co-op in
Romulus.
The sale will include home goods, new and
used jewelry, Christmas decorations, clothing
andmore.
Lunch will be served for $3.50 from 11 a.m.
until 1 p.m. and there will be an ongoing bake
sale all three days.
The co-op is located at 11100 Wayne Road.
Parking is available in the south lot on Wayne
Road or onGabriel Street.
Church plansHarvest Dinner
First United Methodist Church of Wayne
will host a Harvest Dinner from 4:30 until 7
p.m. Oct. 18.
A complete turkey dinner including bever-
age and dessert will be served for $9 for adults
and children 4-12 for $5. Children younger than
4 will not be charged. Pop will sold for an addi-
tional 50 cents and carry-outswill be available.
There will also be crafts, Rada cutlery, a
silent auction for a quilt and a bake sale during
the dinner event.

CemeteryHistory Tour set
Tyler Cemetery will be the site of the
Belleville AreaMuseumandHistorical Society
history tour from 3-7 p.m. Oct. 19. Tours will
start every half hour and includes stories of
many of the first residents of Van Buren
Township, nowburied inTyler Cemetery.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children,

The PlymouthFife&DrumCorps is accept-
ing new members for fife, snare drum, bass
drum, and color guard positions for the 2014
performance season. No experience is needed.

Conservation association servesmeal
The Huron Valley Conservation Association
is sponsoring a catereddinnerwithhomemade
desserts from 4:40-7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Van
Buren Eagles 3996 Hall at 9961 Beck Road in
Romulus.
The meal includes city chicken, roast beef,
sauerkraut and sausage, rolls potatoes, veg-
etable, salad and dessert. Adult tickets are $12
and meals for children 5-12 years old are
priced at $7. Children younger than 5 eat free.

Fall FleaMarket Festival set
The Stardust Lounge and theWatsoniaPark
Block Association are sponsoring a Fall Flea
Market Festival beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 26.
The festival will include games, give-a-ways,

andbargains, a spokesperson said.
The event will take place at 3736 Inkster

Limited spaces for sales tables are still
available for a $10 rental fee. Spaces with a

Judge to tell ghost stories
The Canton Historical Society will host an
evening of Ghost Stories, presented by Judge
Ronald Lowe from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in the
Summit on the Park Grand Ballroom, 46000
Summit Parkway inCanton.
The stories are suitable for children 8 years
of age and older
The evening of spine-tingling tales awaits
those brave enough to attend.
Cider and donuts will also be available,
while supplies last.
Tickets are $10 per family or $4 per individ-
ual and canbe purchased at the Summit on the
Park, the Pole Barn at the Canton Farmers
Market every Sunday, and at the door. All pro-
ceeds benefit theCantonHistorical Society.

and that parents are responsible for the direct
supervision of their children during this spe-
