Dreaming big
Young reader wins special treat
Crowds expected at annual Health and Wellness Fair
Reading is usually it's own reward, but
some participants in the 2012 Summer
Reading Program at the Romulus Public
Library received something extra special
for their efforts this year.
Ella Schaffer, 8, and her family had
lunchwithMayor AlanR. Lambert after her
name was selected among the children who
read books during the program. She chose
the recently remodeled Burger King restau-
rant on Wayne Road near Goddard for her
specialmeal.
Lambert also invited Ella's mother,
Nicole, and sisters, Avery and Lily, to lunch,
along with Chief of Staff Betsey Krampitz.
Restaurant owner JohnDolencic reserved a
table for the group, took the order and even
served lunch.
The day included a tour of city hall with
Cable Director Roger Kadau, who also took
photos of theSchaffers.
Ella and Avery, who is 9½, were among
dozens of young people who kept their
minds active through reading during the
summer. In fact, Avery - an animal lover -
was chosen to have lunch with workers at
theRomulus Animal Shelter.
The lunches and other prizes were part
of the reading program, titled “Dream Big,
READ!”
Library Director Patty Braden said ses-
sions ran from June to August and each get-
together featured fun activities, such as
craft-making, swimming anddancing.
Nicole Schaffer said the reading program
was an important part of her family's sum-
mer.
“I love to read myself,” she said. “I want
them to love to read as well. Avery is a read-
ing machine. Ella just picked it up and is
enjoying it.”
The Romulus Public Library is open to
everyone, but specifically serves the resi-
dents of Romulus, Huron Township and
New Boston. Schaffer said her family
moved to New Boston two years ago, picked
up a flier about library programming and
became hooked on the Summer Reading
Program.
Ella, who just started third grade at
Miller Elementary School, said she enjoys
reading about the Sweet Valley Kids and
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen adventure
books. Avery said she enjoys Wild at Heart
andGoosebumps, among others.
Lambert and the Animal Shelter were
among the sponsors of the Summer Reading
Program. Other sponsors were Little
Caesar's Pizza, the Romulus Athletic Club,
Fire Chief David Allison and the Fire
Department, Chief of Police Robert
Dickerson and the Police Department, the
Rotary Club of Romulus and Sav-On Drugs
FamilyPharmacy.
“Reading is very important,” Lambert
said. “I'm a big advocate of reading and
starting when you're young. Whenmy grand-
children come over for a visit, I read them a
book. And they like reading, too.”
The Romulus Public Library is located at
11121 Wayne Road next door to city hall. To

Worthy said the men misused City of
Romulus funds for their own personal gain,
falsified records and obstructed justice.
“The alleged conduct of the former
Romulus police chief, his wife and the five
detectives in this case defines a culture of
corruption and greed at its core. This is not
an indictment of the entire Romulus Police
Department that has honest, hardworking
officers who put their lives on the line to pro-
tect us eachday,”Worthy said.
St. Andre was the direct supervisor of the
Special Investigations Unit during an investi-
gation of alleged prostitution and narcotics
trafficking at the Landing Strip Bar in
Romulus and Subi's Place in Southgate. The
charges include allegations that the officers
solicited prostitutes for personal gratification.
No results of the alleged investigation were
ever submitted to the Wayne County
Prosecutor'sOffice.
The prosecution also claims that St. Andre
and his wife made numerous cash deposits
into their personal bank accounts that were
well beyond their respective incomes.
Prosecutors allege themoneywas drug forfei-
ture cash intended for law enforcement pur-
poses and that it was also improperly used for
personal expenses including trips for a
female friend and her family members as
well as to purchase a tanning salon in
Westland for SandraSt. Andre.
The former chief is also accused of
attempting to bribe or intimidate witnesses
during the investigation.
The multiple counts of various charges
carry sentences of one to 20 years imprison-
ment.
