Historical museum seeks crafters
The new concertmaster at the
Michigan Philharmonic is a famil-
iar face to concert goers in the
area.
Joseph Deller, a Dearborn
native, has performed with the
orchestra as the principal second
violinist for the past five seasons,
and was recently named as con-
certmaster for the 66th season of
the group.
Deller has a bachelor of arts
degree in violin performance from
Hope College and has been a free
lance musician in the Metro
Detroit area since 2003.
Beth Stewart, executive director
of the Michigan Philharmonic,
said, “We are very excited about
Joe's move into the concertmaster
positionwith the orchestra. He has
worked very hard over the course
of his time with us and is a stellar
player who will bring great musi-
cality and artistic excellence to his
newrole.”
Deller is also associated with
the Flint Institute of Music where
he is a member of the
Troubadours, a traveling group of
string musicians and a storyteller
that visits over 110 schools each
year in Genesee County. He con-
ducts the Concert Orchestra
through the Dearborn Youth
Symphony and also plays Principal
SecondViolin.
Deller maintains a private stu-
dio of violin and viola students at
home and through the Flint
Institute ofMusic.
Sandy Kline is hoping to solve a
mystery this year during the Fall
Festival.
“We're getting a new banner this
year,” she said with a smile,
“because we have so many people
come by and wonder what we're
doing.”
What Kline and other members
of the Plymouth Canton Music
Boosters are doing is hosting bingo
games on Friday night during the
Fall Festival to help fund themusic
programin the schools.
And this year, they a very special
goal.
“Our marching band is the first
one ever, from Michigan, to be
asked to march in the Macy's
Thanksgiving Day Parade,” Kline
said. “But we need to raise nearly
$1,000 each for the 150 kids in the
band so they can go. We're hoping
to do part of that with the bingo
games.”
From6-10 p.m. on Friday, Sept 9,
the will set up the long tables and
chairs, get out the big spinning
drumand begin playing. This is the
third year the Boosters have organ-
ized the bingo games which have
been going on at the festival for
more than two decades.
The games usually attract about
300 or so players during the four
hours of play, but people can come
and go freely.
“People can stop by and play
just one game anytime during the
evening, or stay the entire time,”
she said.
Bingo packets, which include
game cards for each game plus all
the jackpots are priced at $20 and
individual game cards are $1.
The bands, which are not finan-
cially subsidized by the district,
depend on fundraisers like this
one to continue.
The marching band from
Plymouth Canton was the Grand
National Champion at the Bands of
America National Competition in
1990, 1991, and 1999.
Joseph Deller
Miller was arraigned in 35th District
Court on Aug. 26, and charged with two
counts of Arson of a Dwelling or Home; a
felony punishable by up to 20 years in
prison.
Judge James A. Plakas set Miller's bond
for each charge at $50,000 cash.
Miller's preliminary examination on the
chargeswas last week.
