The Plymouth Rotarians are getting ready for the annual Chicken Barbeque when
they will serve about 11,000 chicken dinners beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept.
9.The event has been a tradition in Plymouth for more than half a century and the
chicken recipe remains a secret of the club. Volunteers, like Michael Dudley and
Mike Sullivan, below, spend a Saturday morning at the DPS yard scrubbing and
sterilizing the grills. Last week, the Barbeque Committee, above, organized the
annual "dry run" to help train any newcomers in the preparation of the dinners and
manning of the huge pits erected in the parking lot behind The Gathering in down-
town Plymouth. This year the dinners, which include half a barbequed chicken, an
ear of corn, a dinner roll, chips, dessert and a drink are still priced at only $10, all of
which goes to help charities supported by the Rotary Club.

OK’d by Canton board
Village Faire is Sunday

Another Walgreen's is coming to Canton
Township, but residents won't have to worry
about the drugstore taking up another prime
corner.
The national chain is consolidating three
Ann Arbor locations into one facility in an
industrial park off Haggerty Road, and it will
not be a retail center.
The board of trustees approved a six-year
tax abatement for the specialty pharmacy
that will bring about 250 jobs to the township-
15 of them new-as well as 50 additional jobs
over the next several years. Walgreens will
invest about $2.1 million in a vacant, 64,000
square foot structure onHaggertyCircle.
“This location will also accommodate
future growth,” said Judie Kral, manager of
theAnnArbor locations.
The specialty pharmacy will handle mail
order prescriptions, she said, and be staffed
by call-center agents, patient-care coordina-
tors and pharmacy technicians. Exterior sig-
nagewouldbeminimal.
“It will be about 60-70 percent office
space,” she said. “The remaining space will
be a pharmaceutical warehouse. We're not a
retail location.”
The pharmacy will operate from 8 a.m. to
8 p.m. most days and 8-5 onSaturdays.
The board unanimously approved the tax
abatement, which is for 50 percent of the
value of the newpersonal property installed.
“We look forward to having it in the com-
munity,” saidSupervisor Phil LaJoy.
The annual Village Faire is scheduled to
take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday,
Aug. 26, at Preservation Park, located at 500
N. RidgeRoad inCantonTownship.
The history and heritage of the township
will be on display in living history demonstra-
tions provided by the Sisters of Union, who
will be onsite cooking and sewing in period
garb. Village Faire participants can also
enjoy music, face painting, a petting farm,
guided tours of the Bartlett-Travis House and
more.
The corn roast, sponsored by the Canton
Lions Club, will also be taking place during
the faire. All-you-can-eat wristbands will
again be on sale during the event, and no pre-
registration is necessary. There will be fresh
Michigan-grown produce and local hand-
made crafts for sale at the Canton Farmers
Market on-site at PreservationPark.
The Canton Senior Center is hosting the
Annual Senior Golf Scramble on Tuesday,
Aug. 28, at the Pheasant Run Golf Club-locat-
ed at 46500 Summit Parkway inCanton.
Area seniors, ages 55 and older, can hit the
links for 18 holes of golf in this four person
golf scramble that includes two meals for a
fee of $38 for Canton residents and $43 for
non-residents.
Registration is currently under way at the
CantonSenior Center, located in theParkview
Room of the Summit on the Park at 46000
Summit Parkway. For more information, visit
