8 feet of water about 850 feet from the beach at
Belleville Lake, according to police reports.
The body of Heather Nicole Hill, 20, was recov-

onSunday afternoon.
According to Van Buren Police Capt. Greg
Laurain, police dispatchers received a call on
the 911 line at 9:56 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4. The
caller told the dispatchers that he believed two
of his friends were missing and might have
drowned inBellevilleLake.
According to police reports, the man told the
dispatcher that the three had walked to a sand-
bar in the lake from the beach at Van Buren
Park. He said that they all got into a boat
anchored at the sand bar where they stayed
until about 9:40 p.m. when they started to walk
back to the beach. During the return walk on
the sand bar, the man told police that they all
became disoriented in the dark and his two
friends began towalk away fromthe beach.
The reporting witness told police he heard
that his friends were in trouble but that he was
unable to locate them in the dark. He told
police that he went to a nearby party store

A 9-year-old girl with juvenile diabetes is
raisingmoney to support a cure for her ailment
through a motorcycle ride to the Mackinac
Bridge.
Ally Frederick, daughter of longtime
Romulus residents Jerry and Suzanne
Frederick, has been battling Type 1 diabetes
since November 2011. She has set out to raise
$2,000 by mid-August to donate to the Juvenile
DiabetesResearchFoundation (JDRF)..
At midnight Aug. 17, three Romulus motor-
cycle riders will be among thousands to leave
Rockford in suburban Grand Rapids on a 230-
mile journey to St. Ignace in the Upper
Peninsula in the 26th anniversary of a journey
known as theMidnight Ride.
Bob McCraight, the Romulus building direc-
tor, will join Bill and Danielle Gibson of
Romulus on their annual journey to the
Mackinac Bridge and beyond. McCraight is a
former neighbor of Ally Gibson's mother. The
Gibsons alsohave a diabetic daughter.
The trio has invited other area bikers to join
them on the ride. Frederick's uncle Richard
Hoth, a former Romulus resident now living in
Boyne City, will travel to Rockford for the start
andmake the tripwith some friends.

A telephone inquiry to
Northville police last week led to
the arrest of a volunteer firefight-
er suspected of impersonating a
police officer.
The caller told the Northville
police dispatcher that she want-
ed to verify the identification of
an officer who had stopped her
near her home in Northville
Township in what she was led to
believe was an undercover
police vehicle.
She described the car as a sil-
ver Dodge Magnum with red
flashing lights in the windows.
She stated she left her Northville
home in the area of Parkside
Drive and Glacier and looped
back around the block to make
sure her garage door was closed.
When she returned to her street,
the driver of the Dodge Magnum
motioned her to pull over and
roll down her car window. She
said the driver never actually
identified himself as a police offi-
cer and spoke with a British
accent.
He allegedly questioned her
about her presence in the area
and told her that she appeared
suspicious driving around the
neighborhood. He also told her,
she said, that there had been
break-ins in the area and he was
questioning her in reference to
those crimes.
She said that upon reflection
after the encounter she became
curious and her suspicions
prompted her call to the police
dispatcher.
The driver of the Dodge
Magnum was later identified as
an on-call firefighter with the
Northville City Fire Department.
A police sergeant recalled that
he had spoken to a subject
matching the description of the
Dodge driver when the man
applied for a reserve police offi-
cer position with the Northville
Township Police Department.
The sergeant still had the man's
application on file and went to
the address provided at about 10
a.m. The police officer left a busi-
ness card asking the individual to
call himat the police station.
She said that upon reflection after the encounter
she became curious and her suspicions
prompted her call to the police dispatcher.
