Van Buren wins honor from state township association
WhenRomulus voters head to
the polls on Aug. 7, Romulus
Clerk Ellen Craig-Bragg said she
wants to make sure their ballots
are counted.
It doesn't look like there is
much on the city ballot, which is
printed by Wayne County, she
said, but that is not the case.
“We do not print the ballots;
they're printed through Wayne
County. What we get is what we
get. There is a lot of empty
space,” she said. “You have to be
sure to turn the ballot over.”
Also, since the August elec-
tion is a primary, it is a straight
party ballot. Residents can vote
for democrats, republicans or
libertarians, but not a combina-
tion of those three.
“Youmust vote straight party,”
she said. “If you cross party
votes, your ballot will be
spoiled.”
If youmake amistake on your
ballot-either absentee or in the
polls-you can request a new one,
but you'll have to turn in the
spoiledballot, first.
Also, she said, the August bal-
lot will allow voters the rare
chance to vote twice to fill a con-
gressional seat. Romulus resi-
dents-and anyone in the 13th
Congressional District vacated
by John Conyers-will have two
spots to fill: one to fill out the
remainder of his term, which
ends in January, 2019 and one to
succeed him. Craig-Bragg said
that might be confusing, because
there are six candidates seeking
to replace Conyers in January,
but only four vying to fill the par-
tial term between now and then.
Coleman A. Young II and
Shanelle Jackson are not run-
ning for the partial term.
“We've had some calls on that
already,” she said. “It's very con-
fusing.”
Another oddity: there is one
candidate listed three times.
Brenda Jones is listed as a demo-
crat vying to fill both the partial
and long-term seat for John
Conyers. There is also a Brenda
Jones, a republican, who is a
candidate for the Michigan
Senate in the 5th District. They
are two separate people.
In addition to the state and
congressional candidates,
Romulus voters will be asked to
weigh in on a sinking fund mill-
age proposal for the school dis-
trict. The proposal is to levy up to
3 mills for 10 years to pay for
repairs and upgrades to school
district buildings. If approved,
the measure would generate
about $2.3 million for the district
in its first year.
Absentee ballots have been
mailed out to those who have
requested them, but are still
available. Anyone with questions
should contact the clerk's office
at (734) 942-7540.

bered to match tickets purchased, are
released into the lake and the first three
to cross the finish line are determined the
winners.

used to help theRotary Club fundprojects
in the community including college schol-
arships, dictionaries for third-grad stu-
dents, coats for Kids Program, Band

in the area.

Belleville Rotarian. If still available, tick-
ets will be sold on the day of the race.

of fewer than 500 tickets will result in a
50/50 payout.

to turn the ballot over.
