Ahoy there
Cardboard boat races to launch
Rally to aid Farmers’ Market
Rumpelstiltskin visits Canton
Asmuch creativity as engineering skill
will be required for entries in the very
first Cardboard Boat Race planned for
3:30-5:30 Aug. 9 at the Summit on the
Park Aquatic Center in Canton
Township.
Yep, cardboardboats.
Participants are encouraged to use
creative teamwork to build a boat com-
posed of cardboard and duct tape prior
to the event, explained Brad Chiasson,
recreation specialist for the township.
Boat specifications should be less than
5.5 feet wide by 10 feet long. Cardboard
boat masterpieces can then be transport-
ed to the Summit to compete in the races.
Paddles will be provided for participants
and boats can be raced by one or two
individuals. Races will be done by heat
with five boats per heat. Awards will be
given to the slowest, fastest andmost cre-
ative boats, he added.
"Everyone is encouraged to get
involved in this annual event," said
Chiasson.. "The process of building a
boat is great fun, and the competition
makes it even better. We're hoping that
participants really think outside of the
box and try to create something unique
that can actually float and be raced. This
family-friendly event was really designed
for spectators and contestants alike to
have a blast in our AquaticCenter."
Assistance in finding cardboard mate-
rial is available at (734) 394-5467.The
entry fee for this first-time event is $10
