the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Fund for
Design and Access, awarded by
the Community Foundation for
SoutheastMichigan.
The grant funds will be used to
fund the design of additional
Lower Rouge Trail pathways and
pedestrian bridges. The Lower
Rouge Trail is a popular trail sys-
tem, which offers 3 miles of non-
motorized trails located in the
township. In addition, grant
money will also fund the design
of additional hybrid pedestrian
beacon crossings, also known as
the High intensity Activated
crossWalK (or HAWK) signals,
located at the trail crossings on
Sheldon, Lilley and Lotz roads,
north ofMichiganAvenue.
The Lower Rouge Trail, along
with the ITC Corridor Trail, cur-
rently connects Canton Heritage
Park with the Michigan
Department of Transportation I-
275 Metro Trail, a regional trail
system offering approximately 6
miles of non-motorized pathways
in Canton. The trailhead for the
Lower Rouge Trail is located off
of Morton-Taylor Road, north of
Michigan Avenue. Combined, all
of these trails in Canton offer
more than 10 miles of non-motor-
ized pathways that are open year-
round.
“We are truly grateful to
receive this significant grant for
Canton's trails, which continue to
be a popular attraction in our
community for hikers, bikers, and
nature enthusiasts,” said Greg
Hohenberger, director of Canton
Leisure Services. “These funds,
which honor the legacy of Ralph
C. Wilson, Jr., will assist in
expanding connectivity within
the Greater Southeast Michigan
trail system.”
Future expansion of the
Lower Rouge Trail will include
the development of approximate-
ly 1 mile of trail from I-275 east to
Hannan Road, which will consist
of the future installation of fabri-
cated pedestrian bridges and
HAWKsignals.

“We've been inPlymouth 15 years now,”
she said. “I feel that this community, when
we came, embracedus.”
Allen said she and her husband, Matt,
took a “leap of faith” moving their family-
owned jewelry store from Dearborn after
52 years in business. “My dad's perspec-
tive fromday one in 1950was: give back to
the community. “
Part of what moved her to donate this
necklace to the Plymouth Historical
Museum was knowing that the museum
operates on donations. “What also moti-
vated us was the birthday-150 years,” she
said, “That's a milestone to celebrate. I
thought, what if we designed something?”
The design of the necklace is based on
a great deal of research of 150-year-old
jewelry and the sesquicentennial logo
designed by Brett Wilson of Creativibe—a
graphic design firm in downtown
Plymouth—to commemorate the anniver-
sary.
Designing the necklace took a lot of
iterations—20 drafts—with a full month of
staff input while the design continually
evolved, Allen said. The word Plymouth
had to be worked in, along with 150 dia-
monds. “It's symbolic,” she said, “that's a
lot of diamonds.”
The challenge, Allen said, was incorpo-
rating it in away that wasn't “in your face.”
She said she is very pleased with the way
the necklace looks.
“There's an antiquey, vintage element-it
goes back to the designs of the time,” she
said. “Obviously, this will be an heirloom,
no question.”
“It will be a fabulous party as well as a
major fundraiser for the museum,” she
said. Tickets for the party are available at
the museum, at Dearborn Jewelers and
online at

Township recruiting firefighters
Plymouth Township officials recent-
ly approved the hiring of three new
firefighters and the process to find
qualified individuals continues amid a
competitive environment.
Plans to reopen the Lake Pointe
Fire Station are still on hold after town-
ship trustees balked at the lack of avail-
able finance details in a plan to work
cooperatively with Northville
Township to man the station and
Northville Township officials sought
more time for consideration of the pro-
posal. In the interim, Plymouth
Township Clerk Jerry Vorva is collect-
ing applications to establish an eligibili-
ty list forFirefighter/Paramedics.
Job postings for the often-dangerous
professional jobs have stringent qualifi-
cations, pay well and other municipali-
ties are grabbing up the talent, Vorva
noted.
Applicants for the Civil Service jobs
must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S.
citizen, hold a high school diploma or
equivalent and possess a good driving
record. In addition applicants must
submit to drug screening, a background
investigation and rigid physical and
psychological testing.
The Plymouth Township Fire
Department is a certified Advanced
Life Support department which
requires that applicants be certified
Michigan Firefighter Level 1 & 11,
Hazmat Operations Level certified and
licensed as a paramedic by the state.
According to Deputy Clerk Sandy
Groth, of 17 applicants contacted for
interviews last February only five
responded.
With a starting annual base wage of
$43,041 after five years the salary
becomes $71,735.
Applicants must pass a test accepted
by all participating Michigan fire
departments before applying.
Applicants can schedule the required
test at:
