Students fund solar
power installation
Students and faculty at
Amerman Elementary School in
Northville are especially happy on
days when the sun is shining
brightly.
They take real power fromit.
The school recently had a solar
power system installed on the
school roof. The system, comprised
of high-performance solar panels
from SolarWorld, the largest U.S.
solar manufacturer for more than
35 years, will enable students to
learn about renewable energy
while providing enough electricity
to power a classroom. The installa-
tion is the latest sustainability
achievement for Amerman
Elementary School, recognized as
a top environmental performer by
Michigan'sGreenSchools program.
Amerman's 2.7-kilowatt solar
array was developed through
SolarWorld's Solar2Schools pro-
gram, which promotes solar-energy
education by providing sharply dis-
counted, highly visible solar instal-
lations to schools across the coun-
try. The installation is the culmina-
tion of a year of research and
fundraising by the fourth-grade
class, according to Principal
StephenAnderson.
“The class studied alternative
energy, collected data on solar and
presented it to an engineer,”
Anderson said. “The students spent
the rest of the year marketing and
raising money for their solar instal-
lation. What a great example of
combining science, mathematics,
community service and language
arts.”
The Solar2Schools package
includes a SolarWorld Suntrol®
monitoring system in the school
lobby, providing a real-time data
report of energy production.
“The kids and their families will
be able to see howmuch energy the
panels are generating at any
moment on any web-enabled
device,” Anderson said. “The sys-
tem will become a perpetual solar
classroomand exhibit.”
Mounted on a free-standing
canopy in the schoolyard, the sys-
tem was engineered and construct-
ed by NOVA Consultants, an engi-
neering and environmental servic-
es firm based in of Novi, Duo-Gard
of Canton fabricated and installed
the canopy structure and
McNaughton-McKay Electric Co., a
wholesale electrical distributor
headquartered in Madison
Heights, coordinated the project
and recruited local businesses to
support the effort.
In its role as prime contractor
for the project, NOVA provided
donated and discounted design,
permitting, procurement and con-
struction services to help the stu-
dents reach the goal of establishing
their own solar array.
“Through this project, the stu-
dents and leadership at Amerman
Elementary have demonstrated
their commitment to clean, renew-
able energy,” said Sunil Agrawal of
NOVA. “We are pleased to be a part
of their team and to bring their
dreamto fruition.”
“This project provided an excel-
lent opportunity for local business-
es to come together and support
environmental education in their
community,” said Kevin Kilkelly,
president of SolarWorld Americas.
“Solar systemsmake great teaching
tools. Kids see how solar works -
that it's clean, quiet and abundantly
renewable - and carry that knowl-
edge forward in their studies and
their lives.”
