Lorraine McEachin
Meldrum
Lorraine McEachin Meldrum,
beloved wife, mother, grand-
mother, sister, friend, garden-
er, and dancer left us on Dec.
19, 2011. After marrying
Harold Meldrum on June 21,
1973, Wayne, became her
home. She enjoyed 35 years
working in her gardens, shar-
ing the love of square danc-
ing with friends, golfing, and
walking her Muffin through
the neighborhood.
When the days became short
and the winter winds started
to blow the "snowbirds"
headed south to Arcadia, FL
where you would again find
her tending her flower beds,
on the golf course, dancing
with her favorite guy, and
walking Muffin around the
neighborhood. Over time,
what was first considered a
"senior moment" became
more common and led to the
diagnoses of Alzheimer's dis-
ease. The progression of
her disease eventually led to
a move to Lansing and the
Pines Health Care Center.
Where again you would find
Lorraine dancing down the
halls, enjoying the flowers
and winning the hearts of her
caregivers with her smile and
loving disposition. Lorraine is
survived by her husband,
Harold Meldrum; children;
Scott Sherfield, Cheryl (Jim)
Little, Darie Sundberg, Tim
(Leka) Meldrum and Glenn
(Jessica) Meldrum; grand-
children, Beth Sherfield,
Lynsey (Josh) Clayton,
Melisa Sundberg, Sheldon
Little, Scott Sundberg; two
great-grandsons, Ivan and
Drew Clayton, and her sister,
Jacqueline (Jack) Mathot.
A memorial service will take
place at 2 p.m. June 14,
2012 at Glenwood Cemetery
in Wayne.

Poor fella.
It seems that his nominating
petitions were filled with inconsis-
tencies, you know, small things like
dates clipped from some other doc-
ument and photocopied onto peti-
tion sheets and ink in the wrong
color and strange circulator signa-
tures and duplicate signatures of
the same people-small little cleri-
cal errors like that. Because of
those irregularities, McCotter won't
appear on the partisan primary
ballot and the State Attorney
General is investigating the situa-
tion.
My favorite aspect of this is the
statement from one of McCotter's
three aides allegedly responsible
for the petitions. She said she had
handled the petitions just as she
always had in the past. Now if that
doesn't give one pause. Perhaps
somebody (hint,hint) ought to take
a look at those previous petitions.
Just a thought.
Because of this scandal, the
Republican candidate on the ballot
for Congress from the newly
rearranged 11th District is a rein-
deer farmer who is a staunchmem-
ber of the tea party. I didn't make
that up, either. He's a tea party
reindeer farmer and English
teacher, so you can understand my
concern. I mean even Republicans
don't deserve this.
Lorne Bennett, a former state
senator from Canton Township,
and an old and dear friend of mine,
has already launched a write-in
campaign for McCotter's seat and
several other names are being
bandied about as possible candi-
dates.
Let's just hope Trump doesn't
hear about any of this and try to
endorse one of them, too.

Yet, they continue to do it, year
after year. They do enjoy it, unless of
course, they have to deal with some-
one who has had too much alcohol
and not enough education or a
health scare or a lost child or any of
the myriad of other calamities that
they take in stride and try to handle
effectively with as little disruption as
possible.
It isn't an easy job, working one of
these events as a volunteer.
Professionalism and courtesy is
expected by crowds who don't know
a volunteer fromawater balloon and
often treat one with as much respect
and courtesy as the other.
Before the actual festivals begin,
because the planning and organizing
are all but complete in many cases,
wewould just like to say thanks to all
the people who give back to their
community by donating their time
and talent. We know that families
take a back seat, employers pay for
personal days and usual routines are
forgotten when these events call
these volunteers into service.
We know they enjoy it, or they
wouldn't continue to do it. But we
still think they deserve a vote of
thanks and the sincere appreciation
from the rest of us who attend these
events usually oblivious to the work,
the time, the effort and the dedica-
tion it takes to entertain us for an
afternoon.
So thanks to all the volunteers
whomake these events enjoyable for
their neighbors and their communi-
ties. It simply couldn't be done with-
out you.
