Five newpolice officers are patrolling the
streets of theCity of Romulus.
The new officers are Matt Miracle, David
Brooks, AndrewCarriger, SamFlannery and
Brian Perkins. All five have been formally
sworn in by representatives of the City
Clerk's Office. They were introduced at a
special city council study session last week.
"The overall hiring process was pretty rig-
orous and lengthy," said Chief of Police
Robert Dickerson. "However, after working
through the files of more than 250 appli-
cants, I believe we have a great balance of
dedicated, honorable, enthusiastic and out-
standing public servants."
Miracle is a trained and certified public
safety officer, certified as both a police offi-
cer and firefighter. He was recruited from
the Oak Park Police Department with two
years of policing experience. For the past
few years, he served the City of Romulus as
a volunteer/on-call firefighter. Police Chief
Bob Dickerson said Miracle finished at the
top of both the Romulus police and firefight-
er eligibility list and he chose to accept the
full-time police officer position.
Brooks is a trained and certified police
officer who worked the past two years as a
part-time officer inBelleville. Brooks recent-
ly turned down full-time police job offers
from the cities of Ypsilanti and Belleville as
well as from the Michigan State Police,
choosing instead to become part of the
Romulus police team. He also teaches at the
police academy at Schoolcraft College.
Carriger is also a trained and certified
police officer with a bachelor's degree from
Grand Valley State University. A Michigan
native, Carriger moved to Nevada in 2009 to
accept a full-time police officer position in
the City of Las Vegas and worked there for
three years. Carriger's dream was to return
to Michigan and continue his law-enforce-
ment career and Dickerson said the city is
excited to have himonboard.
Flannery and Perkins are both newly
trained and certified police officers and
recent graduates from the police academy.
Perkins' father, Mark, was the public safety
director in Van Buren Township. Dickerson
said that during the hiring process, both
Flannery andPerkins showed dynamic com-
munication skills, enthusiasm, integrity and
a passion anddesire to serve people.
Mayor Alan R. Lambert said he was
impressed with the skill set and attitudes of
the new officers. The mayor said hiring new
officers is an important step in maintaining
a safe Romulus and is part of Dickerson's
overall plan for moving the department for-
ward.
The five new officers brings the total
sworn officers to 43, including three that are
onmedical disability leave.

A prime parcel of landmay soon
see some redevelopment in the
City of Romulus.
The city council approved a
rezoning request recently that
would see amulti-use development
on a 7.5 acre plot of land at the cor-
ner of Ecorse andHannan roads.
The two structures on the prop-
erty-a residence and liquor store-
will be demolished and three new
ones will be constructed in their
place, according to Frank Jarbou,
who owns the property.
He said he intends to build a
5,000-square foot gas station that
includes a 2,000-square foot restau-
rant, a 16,000 square foot retail
structure and another, 2,400-square
foot building on an outlet there.
“We've already gotten a lot of
feedback froma lot of potential ten-
ants. It looks like it's going to be a
very nice development,” said
Jarbou. “We're looking forward to
doing it.”
The project would be completed
in three phases, with the gas sta-
tion/drive-through restaurant being
constructed first.
Councilman WilliamWadsworth
said he would like to see some new
work at the busy corner.
“It's been an eyesore for a while
now,” he said.
The council unanimously
approved the new zoning, which is
a C-3 or highway service designa-
tion.
Jarbou said he was not yet sure
which tenants would occupy the
new development, but said they'd
be recognizable.
“These are nationally-known
tenants,” he said.

Romulus Police Officer Darryl
Nippes, a four-year veteran,
has been teamed with a
recently purchased German
Shepherd named Aries. The
two will hit the streets over
the next few months once
the initial training and certifi-
cation program is complete.
Aries, according to Police
Chief Robert Dickerson, was
born and bred in Germany
through a strict and proven
successful line of previously
trained military and police
German Shepherds that are currently serving worldwide - which, according to experts, may cost a little bit
more, but provides more assurances and guarantees on the health, temperament and future success of
the new canine. Nippes and Aries' initial training is being conducted under by Master Trainer Terry Foley, a
nationally recognized and award-winning police canine trainer at the K-9 Academy in Wayne. Welcoming
Nippes and Aries to the force recently are Councilwomen Linda Choate (far left) and Eva Webb,
Councilman John Barden, Treasurer Stacy Paige, Mayor Alan R. Lambert, Mayor Pro-Tem LeRoy Burcroff,
Councilwoman Celeste Roscoe, City Clerk Ellen Craig-Bragg, Chief of Police Robert Dickerson and
Councilmen William Crova and William Wadsworth.
