Ceremony marks ground breaking for memorial
Annual Canton Cup to bring 40,000 to township
Northville upgrades planned
Wayne County officials, area
police officers and firefighters
and some elected officials were
on hand last week to help Wayne
County Executive Robert Ficano
break ground for the new First
Responders Memorial in
PlymouthTownship.
The site of the memorial, a 1.5-
acre grassy knoll at Hines Drive
and Haggerty Road was the loca-
tion chosen for the site which will
include a granite monument, con-
crete walkways, pavers, seat walls,
parking accommodations and
lighting.
Funding for the $250,000
memorial will be provided by the
county parks millage and the
annual upkeep and maintenance
expenses are expected to come
from an annual 5K charity run.
Wayne County Parks will host the
initial “Heroes on the Hines Half
Marathon and 5K Run” on the
morning of Oct. 5, when runners
will travel from the west end of
Hines Park to thememorial site.
Ficano said he was inspired to
do something for the fallen first
responders by the loss of a fellow
officer, Sgt. William Dickerson,
who died in the line of duty in
1991. Ficano said the William
Dickerson Correctional Facility in
Hamtramck was named in honor
of the officer.
“It's so difficult to express the
loss of a first responder.” Ficano
said.
James Bowens, father of
Detroit Police officer, Matthew
Bowens, who died in 2004 spoke
briefly at the ceremony. “It's a fra-
ternity we belong to, united by
tragic deaths,” Bowens said, refer-
ring to the camaraderie between
families and friends of lost first
responders. “Support your police
and fire, it's a lasting tribute to
those who make the ultimate sac-
rifice.”
After an invocation led by the
Wayne County Chaplain, students
from Livonia Franklin High
School choir sang the National
Anthem.
Construction is scheduled to
being immediately with a
September 2013 completiondate.

While the majority of the work is sched-
uled to be done this summer, buildings in
theNorthville schools are already preparing
for the technology upgrades approved by
voters lastNovember .
Northville Board of Education members
recently awarded contracts for much of the
classroom technology - to be installed over
the summer months at Northville High
School and the two middle schools and
throughout the fall at the elementary
schools - including new desktop and laptop
computers, classroom audiovisual systems,
document cameras, instructional carts and
interactive whiteboards. Contracts also have
been awarded for replacement and upgrade
of the district's server and storage area net-
work, along with installation of new phone
systems. In addition, the district has transi-
tioned to a new e-mail system this spring
that offers more flexibility and increased
storage.
unit, about 1,400 square feet, will have two
bedrooms, two bathrooms and a sunroom
on the east side of the building surrounded
bywindows.
The second-third level apartment will
feature three bedrooms and two bathrooms
and the third level will contain the master
bedroom and ensuite bath, encompassing
2,200 square feet in total.
Dickson is no stranger to historic preser-
vation. He owns several residential proper-
ties in Plymouth and the 705 Main St. office
complex that was the former Century
Twenty-One sales office. In addition,
Dickson owns the oldest building in Detroit,
the Charles C. Trowbridge House located at
1380 E. Jefferson. The Greek revival style
structure was built in 1826. It is a Michigan
State Historic Site and is on the National
Register ofHistoricPlaces.
