Michigan Philharmonic
wins national honor
Raffle tickets now on sale for Philharmonic Rhine River cruise
Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn and
the Michigan Philharmonic and have been awarded
first place in the American Prize for performance of
American Music by winning the first ever, Ernst Bacon
Memorial Award in the Performance of American
Music, 2016 - Professional Division.
Ernst Bacon (1898-1990) was one of a pioneering gen-
eration of composers who, along with Thomson,
Copland, Harris, and others, found a voice for American
music. Among the many contests of The American
Prize, the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the
Performance of AmericanMusic is unique. It recognizes
and rewards the best performances of American music
by orchestras and choruses worldwide, based on sub-
mitted recordings. Focused exclusively on works by
American composers from any period and in any style,
the contest not only judges performances, but in the
case of newor unfamiliarworks, themusic itself.
Washburn is now in her 18th season with the orches-
tra and has earned numerous accolades and honors
includingwinning 19ASCAPawards fromtheLeague of
American Orchestras as well as first place in the con-
ductor's division of the American Prize in 2013.
Washburn, who has earned a national reputation for
her unique and innovative programming of contempo-
rary repertoire, said “It is an honor for us to have been
chosen as the first winner of this prestigious award.
Special thanks to our concertmaster Joseph Deller for
his outstanding solo work and to our composers
Michael Daugherty, Carter Pann and Kareem Roustom
for their terrific scores, as well as to all themusicians of
the Michigan Philharmonic for their hard work and
musicianship and to our board and staff who support
the programming and performance of American

Can Moliere be relevant 400
years later? That's what
Barefoot Productions Theatre
actors would like to find out.
Barefoot, a staple of the
Detroit-area theater scene for
11 years, will begin the new
year with a production of The
Misanthrope, a classic farce
about the 17th century King of
France, his court and its
hypocrisy.
As Moliere's most famous
play, The Misanthrope tells a
universal human truth: people
want to be liked, and they will
lie to accomplish this.
“The little white lie, used in
polite communications is a
valuable tool.
“When the truth is insisted
upon, the damage can be great
and irreversible. Friendships
lost and enemies made are the
result of miscommunications
that could have been avoided
with a simple bending of the
truth. Our play is about two
lovers, one insisting on telling
the truth and the other inca-
pable of doing so,” said director
and Moilere aficionado Kirk
Haas.
“We have incorporated
today's use of social media,
(smart phones, snapchat, twit-
ter and messenger) to help tell
a story about the rudeness and
damage of misunderstood com-
munications,” he added.
“Moliere is an astute observ-
er of human behavior. Through
his plays he makes us look at
ourselves and the foolishness of
our own actions. His ability to
go from farce to poignant seri-
ousness in a single scene is a
gift. Moliere is my favorite play-
wright,”Haas said.
Performances are scheduled
for 8 p.m. Feb. 17, 18, 24 and 25
and at 2 p.m. Feb. 19 and 26.
Barefoot Productions Theatre
is located in Plymouth at 240 N.
Main St. Audiences enjoy a
more intimate, up close and
personal viewing of the action.
Plenty of free, accessible park-
ing is available. The facility is
handicap accessible.
Tickets are priced at $17 and
senior and student discounts
are available and can be pur-
chased online at
