3 Canton officers promoted
Newburgh Road repaving project set to start
Three Canton Township Police officers
were officially sworn into their new ranks
recently byTownshipClerkTerryBennett.
The three received their new badges from
TownshipSupervisor Phil LaJoy.
Robert Smedley, who has 22 years of serv-
ice with the police department, was recently
promoted to the rank of lieutenant. In his
new position, Smedley will serve as platoon
commander in the patrol division, oversee-
ing the day-today operation of his respective
shift made up of sergeants and patrol offi-
cers. In addition, he will be responsible for
providing training, direction and motivation
of subordinate personnel toward the accom-
plishment of the department's established
goals and objectives, according to a prepared
statement fromthe department.
Daniel Traylor and Eric Kolke were each
promoted to the rank of sergeant in the
department. Traylor has been with the
department for 20 years and Kolke has 17
years on the job. In their newpositions, these
officers will serve as platoon supervisors
providing leadership, training and direction
to road patrol officers. They will also be
responsible for administrative assignments
and special projects, under the leadership of
their assigned shift commander.
"We are very excited about our newly pro-
moted command officers and look forward to
the contributions they will bring to the lead-
ership team of the Canton Police
Department," said Public Safety Director
ToddMutchler.
Resurfacing and repairing work
onNewburgh Road fromPalmer to
Cherry Hill is expected to begin in
May andbe complete in July.
Members of the Westland City
Council approved a contract with
the Michigan Department of
Transportation (MDOT) earlier this
month for resurfacing, concrete
pavement repair, a sidewalk ramp
and pavement marking. The total
cost of the project is $710,500.
Federal funding will pay $581,500,
leaving a balance of $129,000 to be
paidby the city.
"We are pleased to be partnered
with MDOT to maintain good,
working conditions of our roads
and sidewalks. With these harsh
Michigan winters taking a toll on
our roads, it is important to be able
to keep up with the resurfacing
demands," said Westland Mayor
WilliamWild.
Following pre-construction
meetings, resurfacing is scheduled
to commence in May of 2014 and
completed by early July of 2014,
according to Wild's office. There is
also a separate project for road
reconstruction and traffic signal
work on Cherry Hill Road, west of
Newburgh, that is slated to start in
early July of 2014. That project is
expected to be complete by mid-
October.
The two projects are being coor-
dinated to provide the least impact
on traffic and motorists, according
toWild's office.
Lt. Robert Smedley, left, Sgt. Eric Kolke and Sgt. Daniel Traylor accepted their promotions to
their new ranks during a regular meeting of the Canton Township Board of Trustees this
month.
School board officers chosen
Shawna Walker of Westland
was elected as president of the
Wayne-Westland Community
Schools Board of Education.
Walker, first elected to the
board in 2008, served as treas-
urer of the group in 2013 and
2012.
The election took place dur-
ing the organizational meeting
of the board earlier this month.
Walker told the board members
and the audience that she
appreciated the trust they
placed inher.
Carol Middle of Canton
Township, who had previously
served as president of the
board, opted to step down from
that office and was elected to
serve as secretary. She had
served as president of the
board just over two years.
Middel will also serve as the
board representative with the
Wayne Country Association of
SchoolsBoards.
Thomas Buckalew of Wayne
will continue as vice-president
and Frederick Weaver of
Westland will become treasurer
of the board. Weaver will also
serve as the Michigan
Association of School Boards
representative.
John Goci, who had previ-
ously served as secretary of the
board, and who had expressed
interest in becoming president,
told the new officers that they
"have a huge task ahead of you.”
Goci and Trustee SallyMadison
cast no votes in the motions to
elect the four newofficers.
Competency exam set for murder suspect
School plans Open House this Sunday
The Van Buren Township man
charged with the stabbing death of
hiswife has been ordered to under-
go a competency evaluation by the
court.
Richard Jackson, Jr., 39, was
arrested by Van Buren police Dec.
17 when they went to his
Greenwood Court home following
call fromhis friends and family say-
ing he was suicidal and had a gun.
When officers entered the home to
perform a welfare check on the
other residents, they discovered
the body of Travisteene Jackson on
the floor covered with a blanket.
The Wayne County Medical
Examiner ruled the woman's death
a homicide resulting from a stab
wound to the right leg.
Jackson is charged with first-
degree premeditated murder in
her death and could face up to life
in prison if convicted of the
charges.
The preliminary examination
on the charges was in the 34th
District Court before Judge David
Parrott. Jackson's court-appointed
attorney Mark Procida told the
judge the psychiatric competency
evaluation was appropriate.
Jackson will held without bond
until the results of the evaluation
are available to the court and a pre-
liminary hearing rescheduled.
In conjunction with Catholic
Schools Week, St. Mary Catholic
School in Wayne will be hosting a
School Open House from 11 a.m.
until 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26.
