The City of Wayne has hired a consultant
to help with the $2 million deficit budget fac-
ing the community.
The help was in response to a request
from Acting City Manager Ramzi El-Gharib,
who is also the Department of Public Works
director. A four-member committee includ-
ing Wayne Mayor Al Haidous, councilmen
SkipMonit and JamesHawley andEl-Gharib
recommended Farmington City Manager
Vincent Pastue for the position. Pastue and
the council members have agreed to a con-
tract for consulting services at a rate of $75
per hour. Pastue is expected to work 170
hours for a total expense of $12,750, accord-
ing to city documents.
Pastue was to begin meeting with city
council members and department managers
this week regarding budget and financial
issues. The council is expected to adopt a
new budget at the second council meeting in
May.
“The budget is a very important issue. In a
good way, council members have different
view of services,” Haidous said. “I wish we
could implement all their ideas.”
Haidous said that his priority was the
safety of the city. He said the city needs law
enforcement and ordinance enforcement.
“If you don't have a safe city, families won't
buy houses here and we will be in deeper
trouble,”Haidous said.
Haidous and other city officials have
blamed the looming deficit on the crisis in
the housing market which severely impacted
the amount of tax revenue collected by the
city to pay for city services.
The city proposed a millage in November
to fund police and fire pensions which was
defeated soundly by voters.

Demmer Group employees
help fund Starfish service
Wayne hires consultant to help with budget reductions
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
celebrated in Westland
Jim Demmer and 10 of the Demmer
Automotive Group employees made a spe-
cial trip to Inkster-based Starfish Family
Services last week to deliver a very special
gift.
Starfish, a nonprofit organization dedicat-
ed to creating brighter futures for the chil-
dren of at risk families in metropolitan
Detroit, received a donation of $22,875 from
the Demmer Automotive Group, raised by
Demmer employees through a holiday raffle.
The Jack Demmer Automotive Group then
matched the employee contributions.This
significant investment will help Starfish
meet the complex needs of local children
and families who face significant barriers
like poverty and low adult educational levels
in western Wayne County, noted Starfish
CEOAnnKalass.
“We are thrilled to offer this sizeable
donation to Starfish Family Services. This is
especially rewarding since our employees
contributed so generously,” said Demmer,
vice president of the Demmer group. “We've
been fans and supporters of Starfish for a
few decades now, and we know what a vital
role Starfish plays in meeting the needs of
children and families in western Wayne
County.”
Starfish is celebrating its 50th anniversary
this year.
“We recognize that our impact and
longevity are made possible only through the
generosity of people and organizations like
the extendedDemmer family including deal-
ership employees,” said Kalass. “To realize
our vision that all children start school ready
to succeed, we need partners in every sector
including local businesses. The Demmers
are great role-models for giving and commu-
nity involvement.”
Founded in 1963, Starfish Family Services
is an Inkster-based nonprofit organization
serving thousands of vulnerable children
and families annually in metro Detroit.
Starfish primary mission is early childhood
development. For more information, visit

Kalass. Demmer employees collected the funds through a holiday raffle and Demmer
matched the funds for a donation of more than $20,000 to Starfish.
Westland will host the Western Wayne
County commemoration of the life and lega-
cy of Dr. MartinLutherKing, Jr.
The remembrance will take place begin-
ning at 10 a.m. Jan. 20 at the Annapolis Park
Church of Christ, located at 30355 Annapolis
Road, south of Michigan Avenue, between
HenryRuff andMiddlebelt roads.
“It is so important that thework and sacri-
fice of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. are
honored each year to remind adults and to
teach our youth about the history of civil
rights,” said Westland Mayor William Wild.
“The City of Westland is proud to be hosting
this event for the communities of Western
Wayne.”
The ceremony will reflect Dr. King Jr.'s
vision for a nation of equality for all races
and religions through inspirational perform-
ances, artistic representations and historical
perspective by Anthony Lucas, a presenter
from Henry Ford Greenfield Village, who
will be delivering excerpts from Dr. King's
most famous speeches, according to Wild's
office.
To honor this day, city and county digni-
taries are inviting community members to
join them for this free and public event. At
the conclusion of the ceremony, guests are
invited to stay for light refreshments.
