Plans for new Westland City Hall move ahead
Collision closes Ford Road
No injuries reported in house fire
Westlandmay have a newcity hall as early
as January of 2015.
Last week, the city Tax Increment
Finance Authority board members approved
spending the necessary $1.8 million for the
former Circuit City store located on Warren
Road east of Central City Parkway. That
includes the $1.6 asking price for the former
electronics store and $200,000 for other costs
associatedwith the project.
The approval of the funds from the TIFA
district will allow the capture of tax revenues
to fund the project so no additional tax mill-
agewill be necessary for the city hall project.
The TIFA board members also approved
PlanteMoranCressa as the project represen-
tative of the city for the project and OHM as
the architect/engineers for the project. The
board opted for Varnum Riddering to act as
bond counsel and Bendzinski and Co. will be
the financial advisors on the newcity hall.
After a 60-day due diligence period, a con-
struction period of 18 months has been pro-
jected to complete the renovation of the
64,000 square-foot building into handicapped
compliant use as the newWestlandCityHall.
According toMayorWilliamWild, the total
estimated cost on the entire project is bud-
geted at $9 million. Wild said those costs are
not set in stone but that is a starting number.
Wild said that the city council will work on
the budget for the project and that he
expects them to approve a final budget
amount that will not be exceeded in the
acquisition, construction and renovation
phases of the project.
Ford Road was closed nearly all day last
Friday while police completed their investi-
gation into a crash involving two passenger
vehicles and a semi-trailer.
According to police reports, a passenger
vehicle being driven by a 27-year-old female
Canton Township resident was traveling
eastbound on Ford Road, just west of Ridge
Road just before 1 p.m.
Witnesses told police that the vehicle
crossed over into the westbound lane and
was struck head-on by a semi-tractor trailer
being driven by a 61-year-old male. The
impact of the collision pushed the passen-
ger vehicle back into the eastbound lane
where it was then struck by a car being driv-
en by a 26-year-old woman from Garden
City.
Canton firefighters extricated the 27-
year-old female driver fromher vehicle and
prepared a landing zone for her to be air-
lifted to University of Michigan in Ann
Arbor. Firefighter-paramedics treated and
transported the 26-year-oldwoman driver to
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Themale driver of the semi-truck was treat-
ed and refused transport.
There were no passengers in any of the
vehicles involved. Police closed Ford Road
between Ridge and Napier roads for nearly
the entire day as the investigation into the
crash continued. No information on the con-
dition of the two women involved was
releasedby the police department.
No injuries were reported in a house fire
last week inCantonTownship.
Canton fire department personnel were
dispatched to the 46000 block of Spinning
Wheel from the dispatch center at about 5
a.m. last Wednesday, responding to a 9-1-1
call of a serious house fire.
When crews arrived, heavy smoke was
visible from a tri-level home, according to
fire department reports of the incident.
Firefighters wearing protective turn-out gear
and self-contained breathing apparatus
made entry into the house and encountered
heavy smoke and fire conditions in the
kitchen area, the reports said.
The fire was brought under control by
firefighters utilizing two hose lines. The
house sustained significant fire damage in
the kitchen area there was extensive smoke
damage throughout thehome.
The Canton Fire Investigation Unit was
on scene and determined the fire to be acci-
dental innature, according to fire reports.
The homeowner was initially alerted to
the fire by an activated smoke detector and
was able to make it out of the home safely,
reports said.
Therewere no injuries reported.
Dressed for success
Students at South Canton Scholars Charter Academy raised $297 for Hiefer
International by wearing their holiday best to class last week. Heifer International works
to support children in poverty stricken countries with food and educational opportuni-
ties. Those who donate to the non-profit organization can choose to purchase animals
for a family in need. Heifer International trains the family in how to use the animals and
their products, such as milk and eggs, to become self-sufficient. The student council
decided to purchase one flock of chicks, one sheep, one goat, and one boost of nutri-
tion package that will be given to malnourished children. Fourth-grade students
MacKenzie Williams and Kamerin Williams show off their impressive dresses during the
fundraising day. Erin O'Rourke and Meadow Welceh, both second-grade students,
each donated a dollar to help the charity during Dress Up Day.
