munity and the epidemic of
closed and empty shops is to be
cured. Keeping them in business
is good for the municipality, the
schools and you, a fellow taxpay-
er.
Every one of these owners
complains about what the absen-
tee, big-corporation owners do to
their prices and the impact they
have on their bottomline.
I agree with them. After all, my
competitor for their advertising
business is owned by one of the
largest newspaper chains in the
country, and guess who my fellow
small business owners send their
advertising dollars to rather than
supporting their local paper? Oh,
that was a tough one, right?
They quickly forget their carp-
ing about the big corporate guys
when it comes to them spending
their advertising budget.
Now that the holidays are over,
maybe buy a birthday or anniver-
sary gift or household necessity at
a local store, even if you do spend
$2 more for it. The satisfaction
you'll get from just knowing you
did something to help your com-
munity will be well worth the
price.
And keeping them open and
flourishing means they keep pay-
ing their share of taxes helping to
fund the services like police and
fire we all depend on, while those
large corporations are probably
among those who utilize the tax
loopholes the rest of us only wish
for.
So, now that the holiday rush is
over, there are those gift cards
and funds from returning the
light-up reindeer sweater and too-
small cerise, sequin pants. Try
spending a little of that money
locally, because Mildred was
right. A bargain is only a bargain
whennobody gets hurt.
