Recall effort falls short in Van Buren Township

Voters in Van Buren Township voted Tuesday to keep four officials targeted for recall in office.

When the polls closed Tuesday and the votes were counted the four officials—Supervisor Paul White, Clerk Leon Wright, and trustees Al Ostrowski and Denise Partridge—kept their post by about a 400 vote margin.

“I’m very pleased that the voters chose to support us,” White said Wednesday morning. He said he had been fielding supportive calls all morning. “I think the residents were able to see through all the misstatements, inaccuracies and falsehoods.”

About 3,926 votes were cast. In an election where ‘yes’ meant to recall, White received 1,761 yes votes and 2,154 no’s. Wright received 1,723 yes votes and 2,183 no’s. Ostrowski received 1,717 yes votes and 2,178 no’s. Partridge received 1,689 yes votes and 2,145 no’s.

Bob Thorne, a critic of the current administration and member of the recall committee said he was surprised at the outcome and the turnout.

“It’s very disappointing,” said Thorne. “Obviously we didn’t out message out to the voters.”

Don Schoenberger, a resident and critic of the administration, said he was disappointed to. He said he would continue to keep an eye on township politics and speak up at meetings when necessary.

“I’m not going to give up,” he said. “I don’t like what the guy (White) does.”

White said he was not surprised at the outcome or the support of the residents who voted to put him and the other three in office in 2008 and, now, to keep them there.

“I had complete confidence in our residents from the day the recall petitions were approved,” he said.

Thorne said the challenge now was to heal the rift the issues have caused in the community.

“We still live here; it’s our community,” he said. “We’ll come together and move forward in a positive direction.”

I truly hope the recall committee is sincere in healing the rift in the community. Otherwise we’ll just continue to be a divided township and continue what modern politics has become: partisan bickering and people yelling at each other instead of listening.

It will have to come from both sides.

And that will mean some adjustment from White at least. The vote fell short, but it was far closer than the 70-30 gap he thought he’d pull out. I hope that will give him a monent’s pause.

As I told the freep: I hope we were wrong. I don’t think we were, but only time will tell. Ironic view of this: the only way to know if we are right was to lose yesterday.

Healing the rift, as you say, goes both ways. I sincerely hope that Paul White begins “listening” to ALL of the residents. He has never taken responsibility in any part his actions may have played in deepening that rift. So we will just have to wait and see

Thorne, “didn’t get your message out”? You must be kidding! You & your followers were in people’s faces constantly with your message. It was all over everywhere. VBT just didn’t accept it. You under-estimated their intelligence. All of you were loud, aggressive, arrogant, and cruel. Those are the milder traits you displayed. But the majority didn’t drink the koolaid.

I hope you & your followers lost a lot of money, you sure wasted a lot of time and energy. I have cringed at the thought of the evil vibes floating around your meetings as you devised “nefarious plots” (quoting Feldcamp) one after another. The silence from all of you since your failure is like a clean breath of fresh air for VBT.

There were no lies coming from us. While I don’t think it’s helpful to redebate all the issues, I will point to the ballot. White confirmed that their response was a lie. That is a matter of fact, and is captured on video. Sometimes lies work. This is one of those times.

But, from my perspective, so long as the board keeps everything on the level, even that issue isn’t worth harping on.

My apologies to Mr. Thorne. I checked back with him today and found out that I inadvertently misquoted him. When we talked Tuesday night, he said ‘failed to get our voters out,’ not ‘the message’ as the story originally said.

He told me it wasn’t necessary to correct it, but I have fixed it in the online version of the story.

Sorry if this caused any inconvenience.

My heart goes out to the Van Buren community. Poor government deserves to be replaced. A higher voter turnout might have changed the results and removed the inept.
